How to Remove Tarnish (Silver Sulfide) on Ginsai products

    What to Prepare
  • ・Ginsai (silver-decorated) ware
  • ・A pot large enough to hold the ware
  • ・Salt
  • ・Aluminum foil
  • ・Water

How to Do It

  • 1.Fill the pot with enough water to fully submerge the ware, and add salt (about as salty as you can taste). Place the ware in the pot, bring it to a boil, and then turn off the heat.
If using an induction cooker, fold a clean, plain cloth and place it on the bottom of the pot to create a 2–3 cm gap between the pot bottom and the ware. Then place the ware on top of the cloth.

  • 2.If placing multiple pieces in the pot at the same time, separate each piece with aluminum foil large enough to extend beyond the edges, and stack them carefully. (Be cautious, as stacking too many pieces increases the risk of breakage.)

  • 3.If placing only one piece in the pot, you can gently wrap it entirely in aluminum foil or simply rub the surface once or twice with foil using chopsticks. Because this is a chemical reaction, a sulfur smell will be produced—make sure the area is well ventilated.

  • 4.Wait until the water cools, then remove the pieces, wash them, and let them dry. (If not rinsed thoroughly, salt may appear on the surface as it dries; in that case, rinse again.) If you do not have a large pot, you can place the pieces and aluminum foil in a tray or bowl and pour hot salted water over them until they are submerged—the effect will be the same. Please be very careful to avoid burns in this case.
